The Foundress

Juana Josefa Cipitria Barriola was born of a humble family in Andoain (Guipuzcoa, Spain) on May 31, 1845. At a young age, she left her hometown to work in Castilla in order to augment the family income.

Gifted with a great sensitivity towards the most needy, she was not indifferent to the situation of the poor who lived close by, such that, with the risk of losing her job, she would declare, “Where there is no room for the poor, neither is there room for me.”

Her desire to do what God wants was the only controlling motive of her life. On April 2, 1869, in the church of “El Rosarillo”, before the altar of the Holy Family, she once more asked the Lord to make clear for her His will, and God expressed it to her with clarity: to found a Congregation with the name “Hijas de Jesús” (“Daughters of Jesus”) dedicated to the salvation of souls by means of educating the children and youth. It would be in Salamanca, on December 8, 1871, that she would embark on this new adventure together with five other women, her only guarantee being the trust of knowing that what she was about to start was “what God wills”. By such manner, and with the name Cándida María de Jesús, this woman, lacking in the rudiments of culture and material resources, founded the Congregation of the Hijas de Jesús in one of the most important cities considered centers of learning in the Spain of the nineteenth century.

The exclusion of women and of the lower economic classes from the educative sphere moved Mother Candida to pave the way. And from then on, beginning in Salamanca, the Congregation has spread beyond the frontiers of Spain, making her dream a reality: “To the ends of the world I would go in search for souls.”

Mother Candida died on August 9, 1912 in Salamanca. A woman of strength and courage, her life was a constant surrender to God’s will. The Church beatified her on May 12, 1996. Today, her Congregation is present in 16 countries, at the service of all, especially to those who are in most need.

The Hijas de Jesus Community

To be an Hija de Jesús is to be ready to go to places or to human groups most in need of education in whatever part of the world where we can promote God’s glory and the good of our neighbors over our own well being. It means living with the people in a fraternal attitude, open to dialogue in whatever culture, sharing the common bonds of humanity with our brothers and sisters, welcoming our own limitations as well as those of others, feeling the necessity of giving of ourselves as well as receiving from the others.

"IHS" are the first three letters of the name of Jesus in Greek: Iota, Eta, Sigma: It could also mean "Iesu Humanum Salvatore".The IHS is the identifying mark of the Hijas de Jesus found in their ring and in their necklace.
